Box Kites | Triangular Box Kites old classics with new shapes looks and colors

Box Kites are also known as Hargrave kites or Hargrave box kites. They are called hargrave after their inventor Lawrence Hargrave. Box kites were invented in the 1890s and have the ability to carry heavy payloads along with steady and high altitude flights. Because of their abilities they have been used in the past for military and industrial uses. They were also used in meteorological ventures to carry equipment to high altitudes.

Box kites have come a long way since they were first invented and now there are many different types available. The traditional is noticed by most everyone and is the simplest form of cellular kites. Even though it has been quite popular in the past it is less often seen in today's world. It will fly quite well in moderate to fresh winds but it will hold the line only at a somewhat low angle.

Triangular Box Kites are not really as well known as the traditional ones but are just about as old. The most simple of these kites are double celled. This means that they have two sets of sail cloths wrapped around a set of poles with gap between the cloths. They are pretty much like the tradition ones but they have three spars instead of four. Along with the simple form of Triangular Box Kites there is also the ones with wings.

The Triangular Box Kites with wings is just like the original only with wings. The wings were added to give the kite better lift. It was done first by an American by the name of Silas Conyne in 1902 and it was also the basis for the French Military kite in the early 1900s. These kites are often called Conyne kites or French Military kites. Many kite enthusiasts still fly winged triangular kits today.

Another type is the Hexagonal box kite. This kite requires the maker to add more spars, six in total. The kite looks less like a box and more like a barrel. It is said that you can use as many spars as you like when making a kit like this one. You could even go all the way and make a circle kite. The Waldof is another type of cellular kite that looks like a star. It has a six pointed outer star and a six pointed inner star with six pointed wings. This kite was created by Peter Waldron.

The Tumbling Star is, as its name suggests, another star shaped cellular box kite. It is a six pointed star with a hexagonal center. The Circoflex is a simpler design of the cellular kites. It is a round piece of sail cloth without any spars. Its creators Helmut Schieffer and Ton Oostveen introduced the Circoflex at the Dieppe Festival in 1996.

There are other types of box kites as well as the ones listed above. One is the Cody, which was invented by Samuel Cody, an American born in Iowa. His design was just a more complex and winged version of Lawrence Hargrave's original. Another is the Delta Conyne, which is basically Conyne's version of the triangular box kite combined with the Delta kite.

Now, in the 21st century you can get all of these kites and many, many more in stores everywhere whether you are shopping online or off. Just as kites have changed over the years so have the prices of these kites. Some of the more simple ones are pretty cheap but once you start looking into the more complex shapes other than the traditional box kite and triangular box kites you will find that there are bigger sizes and you may be also looking to spend a pretty penny.
